Print Story Not as good as they used to be

The current crop of cartoons has a few gems.  Teen Titans, Megas XLR are both great anyway, and I kinda liked X-Men evolution.  Certainly a lot better than those I remember from the mid 90's.  But I remember really enjoying what we had in the 80's.  This may just be that I was a lot less critical.

So how well do they stack up?  Let's see.

Dangermouse - This is extremely surreal.  I'm surprised I didn't notice at the time.  It's impressive the lengths they go to to avoid having to use any colour - they could put a single colour tint onto the background cheaply but that was it.  So a lot of episodes happen on the moon, or at the north pole, or we get seriously odd stuff like the pink zone and the world covered in custard.

Ulysses 31 - I learned everything I need to know about greek mythology through this show.  It did have the annoying brat effect, and the really annoying robot sidekick.  But it had Star Wars rip-off laser swords in it and a really cool spaceship.

Mysterious Cities of Gold - Surprisingly good and a lot of attention was put into the animation.  Like many contemporary cartoons, background characters are stock still, but they're always justified in this by being posed in a stationary position.  There are a lot of little unessential touches that add character that the animation geek in me likes.  Little things like knocking a vase off a table and catching it.

Transformers - Wow.  That's so corny.  Not actually seen a lot of it though.  I did see the Movie (which now happens in he past) some time ago.  It's trying a bit hard to be cool.

Dungeons and Dragons - Oh god.  This was afwful.  Maybe it is just for kids but you can still have slightly complicated plots.

Knowing a lot of RPGers in real life does add something to it.  Sheila is clearly played by a slightly pervy guy.  Hank is a combat munchkin takes the game way too seriously but hasn't quite worked out how ineffective weapons are for a level 1 ranger.  Bobby is spoof combat munchkin.

Battle of the Planets/GeForce - I quite enjoy GeForce but it's a bit dopey.  the Battle of the Planets producers clearly decided there weren't enough cute robots or Star Wars rip-offs, so added 7-zark-7 and set it in space rather than Earth. They kinda gutted it

Star Fleet - Well, not a cartoon, but the suitmation Dai-X was so cool it has to be mentioned.  Surprising to see such a strong back story in an episodic TV series.  And did this a decade before B5.

I've really got to sort out my CDs of Star Fleet.  There are a lot of currupt frames on a previous generation of the discs, which on a VCD causes severe sync problems.  Anyone know of a good free utility for doing lossless editting of mpegs?  Preferably something that will let me put it on a DVD as well.  8 VCDs might just about fit on a single layer DVD.

So there you have it. Watch Dangermouse, Ulysses and Cities of Gold. Avoid D&D and Transformers. anything else I should look at?

Dangermouse by Herring (4.00 / 1) #1 Fri Dec 08, 2006 at 08:00:19 AM EST
I maintain that this is the only decent television that David Jason has done. Open All Hours was almost bearable but the rest of his stuff (and there is a lot) has just been shit. And it's on telly all the fucking time.

Was that the one where it was all puppets?  The final episode was where the princess's spaceship was under fire, and her gorilla-like protector took a laser beam and died protecting her?

Also, Watoo watoo.  Mental.

That's probably the one by squigs (2.00 / 0) #6 Fri Dec 08, 2006 at 08:26:15 AM EST
I was only 6 at the time and I'm not all the way through.  Can't really remember what happened at the end.

But yes.  It was a puppet show.  Often mistakenly assumed to be a Gerry Anderson series, with princess and furry protector.

Should have put a spoiler tag on that one then!

How about Terrahawks?

I'm not that spoilerphobic.

Terrahawks seemed pretty cool back then.  I've not seen a whole episode, but may see if I can borrow some from a friend.  I remember I liked the Zeroids.  And the hardware was cool.

I did see the opening credits.  Century 21 really knew how to get those right.  Those action words at the start:

Terrahawks "Stay on this channel!  This is an emergency!"
Stingray "Stand by for action!"
Thunderbirds 5...4...3...2...1 Thunderbirds are go

Followed by pacey beaty music.  Thunderbirds was a classic.

It was ok, nothing amazing. Though Cheetara was hot. Honest.

Why, when they were all contained in cryogenic wotsits, did only Lion-o age?

I've got a couple of Ulysses 31 videos by nebbish (2.00 / 0) #12 Fri Dec 08, 2006 at 10:51:20 AM EST
I picked up in Oxfam a while back. More surreal than Dangermouse, with some great music (not the title track though) and some downright trippy 2001-style fx. I love it. Also, Ulysses centre parting looks funny. It's like a kind of second moustache.

What else to look at: Voltron by The Fool (2.00 / 0) #14 Fri Dec 08, 2006 at 12:21:44 PM EST
I remember thinking (in 4th grade) that this was the best cartoon ever made. It had it all--giant robots, beautiful princesses, giant robots, evil overlords, giant robots, interstellar voyages, and, of course, giant robots.

I never did figure out why there were two different incarnations of Voltron.

Another show that was a favorite of a friend was "Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors".

If I remember correctly by ks1178 (2.00 / 0) #16 Fri Dec 08, 2006 at 01:11:22 PM EST
They were base off of 2 different anime series from Japan, that the makers decided to combine into 1 show over 2 seasons here in the States. The first being season 1 (Lion Voltron), and the second season being the vehicle Voltron.

I know the various lines of Transformers were the same way, where they had multiple product lines in Japan (in this case just toys, not actual anime series), and combined them into 1 children's TV show in the us to sell it all.

Much better than the live action show.

+1 mentions G-Force . . . by slozo (4.00 / 1) #17 Fri Dec 08, 2006 at 01:34:51 PM EST
. . . most awesomest show ever from my youth. (except for Wonder Woman, who had real boobs, but you can't fight that). Fiery Phoenix! Ah yes, Luke, Jason, Cheeop, Tiny, and Princess. Mmmm, Princess . . . she was pretty sweet for a toon . . .

Know where I can get hold of some?
